SING-A-LONG WITH BOB
Dylan Website Offers All His Lyrics Have
you ever wanted to sing "Like A Rolling Stone" in the shower, but couldn't
remember all the words? How about wowing your friends with a karaoke rendition of
"All Along the Watchtower" or "Masters of War"?
Now, you'll never be at a loss for Dylan's words, as his official
website, Bobdylan.com, offers the
lyrics to all of his songs.
This treasure-trove is among the great discoveries on the
Internet. Many websites offer song lyrics, but they are often challenged by the
publishers, who do not take kindly to their works being available online for free and
without their permission. In the case of Bob Dylan's songs, however, these lyrics are made
available from the authorized source himself.
The list includes Dylan's original compositions as well as older tunes (like
"Corrina Corrina") that he adapted. You can view the songs alphabetically by
title, chronologically or alphabetical by album. Thus, you can see what order he recorded
them in, and solve any trivial disputes about which album contained which song. There's
also a Search engine where you can look for individual songs directly.
Some songs that were not written by Dylan, such as the Band's
"The Weight", don't have lyrics but do offer RealAudio and Windows Media clips
of the other artist's performance.
Others
that recorded on multiple Dylan albums and in various performances spotlight both the
lyrics and sound samples from each of the different versions. For exampl e,
"Ballad of a Thin Man" has excerpts from the recordings on Highway 61
Revisited, Before the Flood, At Budokan, Real Live and Live
1966.
If all this weren't enough, the Album section of the website has audio samples of
every song on every Dylan album, many of them newly remastered in Hybrid Stereo and some
with Surround Sound. The Performances section presents Dylan songs covered by other
singers. There are also Discussion and Store areas, plus, in the spirit of cyber
freedom, Links to other non-official Dylan websites.
It's difficult to imagine the amount of work that went into putting this
extraordinary website together. We congratulate all involved in the project.
